More Information

    Benefits of Breakfast

Eating breakfast can help improve math, reading, and standardized test scores.

Children who eat breakfast are more likely to behave better in school and get along with their peers than those who do not.

Breakfast helps children pay attention, perform problem-solving tasks, and improves memory.

Children who eat school breakfast are likely to have fewer absences and incidents of tardiness than those who do not. By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein.

Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast on a regular basis are less likely to be overweight. Eating breakfast as a child is important for establishing healthy habits for later in life.

Schools that provide breakfast in the classroom to all students have shown decreases in tardiness and suspensions as well as improved student behavior and attentiveness.

What you eat for breakfast can have an impact on learning. One study showed that eating breakfast food high in fiber and low in sugar for breakfast helped students sustain the cognitive effects of breakfast.

School Breakfast provides ¼ the recommended amounts of protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C for the day.

    Public Release

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Special School District (HRBSSD) announced its policy for free and reduced-price meals for children served in schools under the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program. For School Year 2026-2027 HRBSSD will continue participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). No further action is required of you. This USDA provision allows your child(ren) to participate in the school meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application.

CEP is a key provision of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, which allows schools and school districts in low-income areas to eliminate school meal applications and serve breakfast and lunch at no charge to all enrolled students. By offering all students a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no cost, CEP helps ensure more students come to class well-nourished and ready to learn.

Children need healthy meals to learn. HRBSSD offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast and lunch meals will follow the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines for healthy school meals, so please encourage students to participate. “In the operation of child feeding programs, no child will be discriminated against because of race, sex, color, national origin, age, or disability.”

Parents or guardians who need further information may contact Regina McGuire, Child Nutrition Program Director at 731-418-4184 or mcguirer@hrbk12.org
